Hey! Thank you for stopping by. I made this huge blog post to introduce you with leggings. I think you already know what leggings are and maybe even have them. But I guarantee that you will still collect a lot of useful information about leggings.
So let’s start.
Leggings have already confirmed them as a fashion trend. They have a real staying potential. Despite that being said there are a lot of confusion regarding how to wear them lingers on. Are they pants or tights? Do they apply to any fashion rules? The leggings are so popular because they are simple to wear, they are very comfortable and fits everyone. And they can be worn in so many various styles once you get the skill of layering. And the best is that you can wear them all year around whether it is winter or summer.
A bit of history
Leggings have been worn for warmth and protection by both men and women throughout the centuries. Various leggings types are known since 13th century. Leggings wore hunters, French fur trappers, mountain men, cowboys etc.
Leggings protected from bites from animals, such as snakes or insects. In many places, men and women proceeded to wear wool leggings into modern times, often as an extra outer layer for warmth.
The linen pantalettes worn by girls and women under crinolines in the mid-19th century were also a form of leggings and were originally two separate garments. Leggings became a part of fashion in the 1960s, as trousers similar to the capri pants but much tighter.
Today, leggings typically contain some lycra (aka spandex), nylon, cotton/poly, or other polyester blended fabrics. Leggings may also be made from wool, silk, and other materials.
Leggings types can divide into various categories. Due to the fact that these categories are not written, I have my own.
So I divide leggings by length, by material, and by design (print).
Leggings by length
Leggings can be a short or normal length. Short leggings are a little bit over the knee. Normal leggings are usually till ankle.
Short leggings have their own name and they are called Capri leggings.
Capri leggings are a type of short, fit, cropped legwear that is attractive both for fashion and for training, most commonly with women. These leggings can be worn separate, or underneath a skirt or shorts, and they are suitable for both cold and warm weather.
Leggings by material
Most popular in this category are:
Denim leggings (Jeggings)
Other leggings are wool leggings, silk leggings etc.
Spandex leggings are made of a spandex, lycra or synthetic fiber and are popular because of their elasticity. Spandex leggings also have a significant strength. They have the ability to return to the original shape after stretching and faster drying than ordinary fabrics.
Spandex leggings are usually mixed with cotton or polyester and account for a small percentage of the final material, which therefore preserves most of the look and feel of the other fibers.
Most of the leather leggings are not actually made from leather but from faux leather.
The leather is any tanned, toughened (yet pliable), dried, and dyed skin of an animal. Most types of leather can be found in nearly any color. Leather are quite expensive and are not stretchy material that’s why there is faux leather produced. Faux leather is made from a fabric base, which is chemically treated with polish, stain, or polyurethane for a color and texture. Ultimately, it is manmade and exists to give the appearance and texture of real leather at an exceptionally lower cost.
Denim leggings are also called jeggings. First, they came popular in the 1980s by metal ant punk bands. Today denim leggings are the very popular fashion trend. Choosing your denim leggings depends on various factors, for example, your body type, what you plan to wear with the leggings, your style etc.
As leggings are a type of skin-tight clothes you may be surprised how then there can be cotton leggings because cotton is not a stretchy and skin-tight material. Actually, cotton leggings are leggings that contain at least 50% cotton. Other fabrics can be polyester or spandex.
Cotton leggings tend to have an excellent fit, breathability, comfort and retain their shape and color after washing. Cotton is a natural premier material for textiles.
Leggings by design
Also, could say leggings by pattern or by print.
The most popular are:
And due to the fact that I don’t determine leggings by use, I count also Fitness leggings into this category. Sometimes also called as sports leggings or yoga leggings.
Leggings Style Tips for Body Type
So now you know what are leggings, know leggings types and materials. So logically comes next question, can I wear this? How will they look on me? And the answers are yes you can wear them and they will look great on every body type. If followed by some tips leggings can look elegant and stylish no matter your shape.
Avoid Capri leggings if you are petite. Choose full-length leggings instead – they will visually elongate your legs. When determining footwear, strive for a color near to the color of the leggings to perform a longer silhouette line. For the best silhouette, prefer a dark pair of leggings and pair with tall boots in the similar shade.
You should be lucky if you are tall because leggings will let you show off your beautiful long legs. You can choose various styles of leggings and wear them with tunics, knit dresses, knitted sweaters, shift dresses, also, mini dresses that otherwise would have stayed a little too short on their own. You can also add a long jacket for a draped layering effect.
If you have an hourglass shape, it’s all about bringing attention to your waist. Belted tunics will emphasize your soft waistline. Leggings in smaller, tight designs or dark solid colors are the most flattering.
If you’re pear-shaped, choose a leggings outfit that brings more attention to your upper body with a brilliantly colored or printed tunic top. Use accessories for example necklace or patterned scarf, they will balance an outfit. A tunic fashion top that covers your bottom should drop to the widest part of your hips for the most flattering profile.
